About milkdrop

MilkDrop is the music visualiser created by Ryan Geiss for Winamp in 2001. Its presets combine per-frame and per-pixel equations with a feedback loop that warps the previous frame, producing its characteristic flowing, psychedelic look. Tens of thousands of community presets exist.

Several projects keep that preset format alive today: standalone Windows successors, a cross-platform library, a browser implementation and VJ tools. See What is MilkDrop? for the history.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still use MilkDrop without Winamp?

Yes. MilkDrop 3 and BeatDrop run as standalone Windows programs that react to any system audio, projectM runs on Linux, macOS and Windows, and Butterchurn runs MilkDrop presets in a web browser.

Do MilkDrop presets work in projectM and Butterchurn?

Most do. Both reimplement the MilkDrop preset language, although compatibility with presets that depend on specific shader features can vary.
