About spectrogram

A spectrogram plots frequency on one axis, time on the other and level as colour, producing a heat map of a recording. It reveals detail that waveforms and instantaneous spectra hide, such as harmonics, noise, and where lossy compression has removed high frequencies.

Spectrograms are used for audio analysis, music research and quality checks rather than decorative visuals.

Frequently asked questions

How can a spectrogram show whether a file is really lossless?

Lossy encoders such as MP3 typically discard content above a cutoff frequency. On a spectrogram this appears as a sharp horizontal edge, often around 16 to 20 kHz. A file converted from MP3 to FLAC keeps that edge, even though the FLAC format itself is lossless.
